What are Radiation Frosts?
Radiation frosts are a special type of spring frosts that occur on clear, windless nights. When there are no clouds, the earth and plants freely radiate the heat accumulated during the day into the atmosphere. Due to the absence of wind, warm air does not mix with cold air, and the temperature near the soil surface drops sharply. This cooled layer can be 3–7°C colder than the air at a height of 10–15 meters.
As a result, the cold accumulates exactly where the sensitive parts of the plants are located — flowers and ovaries. Even a short-term temperature drop to –1...–2°C can damage the harvest of stone fruit and berry crops. Radiation frosts are the main cause of spring losses in orchards and vineyards, especially in continental regions.
